“牛津应用语言学丛书”以语言教学为中心,强调理论与实践相结合,重视实用性和可操作性,开展跨学科和多学科的研究,全面反映了当今国际应用语言学研究的学术水平和新的研究成果。外教社于1999年开始引进出版本套丛书,以求对我国的语言学和应用语言学的教学研究与改革起到良好的促进作用。
丛书的作者大都是从事“英语作为第二语言教学”的资深教授以及从事应用语言学或相关学科研究的高级研究人员,例如:H·G·威多森是伦敦大学教育学院的对外英语教授;世界级大师H·H·斯特恩曾担任安大略教育研究学院现代语言中心主任,是加拿大卓越的教学法专家之一;R·埃利斯是美国费城坦普尔大学教育学院教授,长期从事作为第二语言的英语教学和研究工作;J·辛克莱是英国伯明翰大学的现代英语教授,以一直致力于建立和改进COBUILD语料库而闻名于世。
本书对如何着手进行第二语言研究提供简单明了、详实全面和具有权威性的指导,既为第二语言研究构建了理论框架,也是如何着手进行具体研究的“工作手册”。关于第二语言研究的框架,作者介绍了别具一格的四参量法:①使用综合法还是分析法;②以描述为目的还是以证明假设为目的;③研究范围的控制和调整;④数据和数据收集。四参量法为第二语言研究的描述、分析和评估提供了有效的选择范围,也有助于从客观和全面的角度来看待研究的策划与方法。作者以四参量为依据对研究课题的确定和假想的提出、自然的与实验性的研究、数据收集以及研究手段的有效性等进行了讨论,认为这四种参量概括了第二语言研究的独有的特征。
