An Empirical Investigation of the Componentiality of L2 Reading in English for Academic Purposes
This volume reports on a major study to investigate different reading behaviors in English for academic purposes (EAP). A strong focus on close and careful reading at the local level in the teaching and testing of L2 reading means that we have tended to ignore global reading behaviors such as skimming, search reading and scanning. Relatively little is known and understood about how readers process texts quickly and selectively, i.e. expeditiously, so they can extract important information in line with their intended purpose(s) for reading.
The development of the Advanced English Reading Test (AERT) for university students in the Peoples Republic of China under the auspices of the National College English Test Committee provided the vehicle for investigating the nature of different types of expeditious reading at the global level.
Key features of this volume include:
·analysis of the factors involved in EAP reading and its assessment
·description of the methodological procedures that led to the development of the AERT discussion of the results of empirical investigation carried out to establish test validity, both a priori and a posteriori
·conclusions and recommendations for future test development and research.
This volume offers a blueprint for researchers in the field of reading assessment, and it also provides valuable insights into different reading styles for teachers and testers of reading in an additional language, especially reading for academic purposes in higher education.
